COMPARTÉS

Famous Chocolatier, Compartés, builds their latest store in Los Angeles in Century City. Designed by Kelly Wearstler and Compartés owner Jonathan Grahm, with architectural design by Krueger Architects.

Inspired by the Compartes’ mantra of ‘Chocolate is Art,’ we were driven to create a space worthy of such art.  The aesthetic vibe of the space harkens back to chocolate shops of the early 20th century as seen through a modern California lens.

Design in action, the making of beautiful chocolate, Jonathan Grahm

Chocolate is Art

Every element of this boutique confection shop was custom designed and fabricated.  Unique elements beautifully showcase the confections both as they are being created in the commercial kitchen and then displayed for purchase.  The new 430 square foot space is the newest Compartés store in Century City and was a design collaboration with Jonathan Grahm, Kelly Wearstler, and Krueger Architects.

Behind the counter, an ebonized wire-brushed wood wall was carefully designed in geometric patterns–inspired by the artist Louise Nevelson. The wall incorporates a hidden door that leads to the commercial Kitchen area.  This is where all the magic happens and the finishing touches are made to the handmade, gourmet chocolates.  Frozen hot chocolate drinks are mixed as chocolate continuously flows from custom brass faucets. A rich and inspired dusky emerald color used on the exterior and interior unifies the entire design.

The materials include patinaed copper, honed and tumbled marble, brass, glass, onyx, ebonized wood, and hand troweled plaster. Artisans created display pieces for the store; including made locally in Los Angeles, ceramic bowls created by Morgan Peck. Hand-blown glass domes crafted by New York artist Anna Karlin protect and playfully display the chocolate.
