ULLA JOHNSON

Krueger Architects collaborates once again with Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler; this time on the new Ulla Johnson store in West Hollywood.  Located in the Design District on Beverly Boulevard, this is Johnson’s first store outside of New York.  The store’s design is a nod to her east-coast roots, but is distinctly Californian.   Wearstler weaves natural materials throughout the architecture of the space with the haute designs of Johnson’s ready-to-wear, bold patterned clothing. The vibe is purposefully experiential exciting the senses with the textures of custom and vintage furnishings, muted wall coverings, unique flooring, and sculputural merchandise displays.

Retail must be experiential to bring the customer into the store.

New West Hollywood Ulla Johnson Store

A visit to the newest Ulla Johnson store in West Hollywood is imbued with the brand’s eclectic sense.  The 3,000 square foot retail space has a relaxed, yet upscale, ambiance.  Customers are greeted by a soft pallet of deep gold and terra cotta beckoning them in to peruse the latest collection. Comfortable, vintage furnishings, as well as new pieces designed specifically for the space, make the interior feel intimate.  The clothing and accessories are displayed artfully throughout the airy, bright space, which underscores the warm, sophisticated nature of Ulla Johnson’s ready-to-wear line of clothing.

A 16-foot Brachychiton tree stands within the 2-story solarium at the center of the retail space.  Custom interior details include a parquet floor with one white-washed board prancing randomly in each square.  A large-scale entry table made of resin, and designed by local artist Ross Hansen, showcases a rotating assortment of merchandise.  A full wall of large display shelves is clad with a veneer of burled wood, which also covers the ceiling in this alcove.  Ascend the staircase to the second floor and you’ll find more merchandise displays, as well as a private, VIP dressing room for trying on the bold patterns and flattering silhouette creations of Ulla Johnson.
